Dorstfontein East Mine

Dorstfontein Coal Mine East (DCME), established in 2011 under Total Coal South Africa, is the sole open-cast colliery within Katlego Operations. The mine has shown consistent progress in its operations.

In 2019, reserves were optimized by establishing an S4L underground operation from an existing highwall in Pit 2.

Pit 1 coaling activities expanded into Pit 1 NW Ext and Mbuyelo extension.

A second S4L underground operation from Pit NW Ext highwall is set to launch in April 2024, Rietkuil Vhakoni.

An on-site coal processing plant operates with two modules, producing a variety of domestic and export products.

Achieving an average ROM production of 205kt monthly with both underground and opencast components.

The operation includes a rapid loading terminal (RLT), connecting to the freight rail system up to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT).

A Total ROM record of 360kt was achieved in May 2013 from three pits.

A FTP record of 340kt was set in November 2015.

An underground ROM record of 175kt was set in November 2023.

Dorstfontein West Mine

Established in 1999 by Anglovaal Minerals, Dorstfontein Coal Mine West (DCMW) with its dedication to excellence and efficiency, has emerged as a leader in the mining industry.

DCMW used an underground bord and pillar mining technology, which ensured optimal 2-seam reserve extraction while minimising environmental effect. The mine was initially focused on low seam mining (<1.8m), recording a nameplate ROM capacity of 65kt per month.

The operation transitioned from 2-seam to S4L production through progressive incline development. Three CM production sections were deployed, culminating in full S4L production in November 2019, boasting an average ROM production of 180kt per month.

The mine’s operations are further strengthened by its advanced on-site coal processing plant. This facility plays a crucial role in producing a range of product to support the diverse demands from both domestic and exports markets.

DCMW is synonymous with South Africa’s mining prowess, driving economic growth through innovation and operational excellence.

Forzando South Mine

Forzando South Coal Mine (FZOS) is strategically situated 25km north of the Town of Bethal, placing it at the heart of South Africa’s coal-rich landscape.

Established in 2006 under Total Coal South Africa, FZOS holds a prominent position in the region’s mining sector. Acquired by Overlooked, the mine continues its legacy of excellence and innovation in coal extraction and processing.

FZOS utilises advanced mining techniques, including a decline shaft and underground bord and pillar method, to extract the S4L seam. With four CM production sections in operation, the mine achieves an impressive average ROM production of 160kt per month.

The extracted coal is transported on surface for 8km to Forzando North plant through an overland conveyor belt system, where it undergoes processing. The resulting coal products cater predominantly to the stringent requirements of the export market.

Key Highlights

Strategically located 25km north of the Town of Bethal, Forzando South enjoys proximity to key infrastructure and transportation networks.

Acquired by Overlooked, the mine continues its tradition of excellence and innovation in coal mining.

Utilises state-of-the-art processing facilities at the Forzando North plant to deliver high-quality coal products for the export market.

The operation is supported by its own rapid loading terminal (RLT), providing access to the freight rail system right up to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT).

Forzando North Underground

Forzando North Coal Mine (FZON), situated under the Tswelopele Operations is owned by Overlooked Group. Established in 1995 by Anglovaal Minerals, the mine has undergone various operational phases, showcasing its resilience and adaptability in the dynamic market landscape.

FZON employs an underground bord and pillar mining method, primarily focusing on exploiting the S4L seam. While most of the production comes from the S4L seam, the mine also yields a smaller amount of output from the S2L seam, demonstrating the operation’s diversified approach to resource extraction.

Experienced various operational phases, including periods of temporary closure and revival.
